Autoworld news: Toyota closes plant in Russia and lays off employees

As it became known to Motor, Toyota decided to reduce the employees of the Russian office and pay them from 12 salaries. The brand also closes a plant in St. Petersburg, which produced RAV4 crossovers and Camry sedans. By autumn, the company had not resumed work, so dealers are selling off the remains of cars that they managed to assemble or import into Russia before the imposition of sanctions restrictions.

“Motor” turned to the Russian representative office of Toyota for a comment, but the press service could not promptly clarify the situation. Meanwhile, the news of the closure of the plant published Kommersant, according to which the Japanese automaker was never able to restore the supply of components. At the same time, there is no talk of leaving the market.

Dealers still have some stocks of imported cars. According to information that appeared earlier, the under-assembled RAV4 and Camry were dismantled for spare parts, “so that there is at least some margin for fulfilling warranty obligations.” Those cars that were distributed among car dealerships according to quotas are sold much more expensive than the RRP: cheating from several hundred thousand rubles to several million rubles.

As for the St. Petersburg plant, it is designed to produce 100,000 cars a year. In 2021, 80.8 thousand cars rolled off the assembly line of the enterprise, which were sold not only on the Russian market, but also delivered to Kazakhstan, Belarus and Armenia: at the end of last year, the share of exports amounted to 11.9 percent of the total output.

According to the Association of European Businesses, sales of Toyota and Lexus amounted to 20.9 thousand cars in eight months of this year, which is 72.3 percent less than in the same period last year.
