Recently, there have been open and covert threats from Moscow that nuclear weapons will be used in the war in Ukraine. In Washington, this risk is seen as real. According to the White House, Russia would have to consider the “consequences” if that were to happen.

The United States believes Russia may use nuclear weapons in the war against Ukraine, but there are currently no indications of an imminent attack of this kind.

At the same time, Sullivan emphasized: US President Joe Biden’s chief security adviser added that the US was “clear” to Russia about the “consequences” of using nuclear weapons.

Sullivan also said US forces in Europe are prepared for all conceivable scenarios. He noted the build-up of US troops during the months of the Ukraine war.

Putin threatens annexation

In the West, there are fears that Putin may turn to nuclear weapons in the face of a serious military setback in Ukraine. The Russian president has repeatedly threatened to use nuclear weapons. Most recently, Putin said, among other things, that Russia would defend its territory. Russia now includes four regions of annexed Ukraine. This is interpreted as a threat to use nuclear weapons.

The US government has warned Putin against such a move publicly and through a direct channel between Washington and Moscow. Stoltenberg also threatened “serious consequences” if Russia used nuclear weapons in a war with Ukraine.
