AT interview GQ James Cameron spoke about the start of production of the iconic “Titanic” – the film that made Leonardo DiCaprio a real star. According to the director, everything could have been completely different and Leo could not have played in the film at all.

The fact is that after filming What’s Eating Gilbert Grape and The Basketball Player’s Diary, the young actor felt like a celebrity and did not want to audition for the role of Jack. However, Cameron insisted that he still play a small episode.

He told me, “Should I audition for a role? Oh, I don’t do that.” Then I shook his hand and said: “Thank you for stopping by. It’s a gigantic film that will take two years of my life and you’ll be doing other things while I work on post-production. So I’m not going to waste my chance by making the wrong casting decision. So you either audition or you don’t get the part.” And so he comes to the audition and literally hates me with every cell of his body. But as soon as I said: “Motor”, he turned into Jack. Kate Winslet just lit up and they played the scene. Then I was finally convinced that Leo was exactly the one I needed.

After the premiere, Titanic became the highest-grossing film in the world, grossing more than $ 2 billion at the box office. After that, only two films can break the record: Cameron’s Avatar and Avengers: Endgame.
